Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields. With women accounting for only 28% of the STEM workforce globally, representation is more important than ever. They must be seen and heard in order for more women, particularly young women, to find a passion for STEM through representation in various media. If you are a bookworm who is still unsure about pursuing STEM, here are 5 books I recommend reading to change your mind!
1. Slay by Brittney Morris

Described as “Warcross meets Black Panther,” this fierce young adult debut novel follows a teen game developer who is up against a real-life troll who is out to destroy the Black Panther-inspired video game she created as well as the safe community it represents for Black gamers. If you want a story that is so diverse and adventurous, this book is for you!

2. My Mechanical Romance by Alexene Farol Follmuth

If you love Taylor Swift and Robotics, I recommend reading this debut YA book by the bestselling author of The Atlas Six (under the pen name of Olivie Blake). My Mechanical Romance explores both the challenges that girls of color face in STEM and the vulnerability of first love with unfailing wit and honesty. A bonus fact, the main character is half-Filipino! So what are you waiting for? Read this if you want a swoon-worthy story that will make you feel all the feels!

Looking to start a new book series? Maybe start with four books that will completely captivate you! The Stalking Jack the Ripper series follows Audrey Rose Wadsworth, a lord's daughter who secretly studies forensic medicine, allowing her to investigate several serial killers and gruesome murders. If you enjoy the enemies-to-lovers trope and are a big fan of the mystery genre, I highly recommend this book series!

4. The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren

Are you a fan of romance novels? I've got you covered! The story follows Jess Davis, a single mom and data and statistics wizard who doesn't want to return to the dating scene until she learns about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that's predicted to change dating forever. Nothing can possibly go wrong, right? The Soulmate Equation, written by a New York Times bestselling author, offers a delicate balance between fate and choice that can never be calculated.

5. Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win The Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly

Do you need to read a nonfiction book? Then I highly recommend this! Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden are four African-American female NASA mathematicians who helped achieve some of our space program's most defining moments. This book appears to have been adapted into a film! So, read the book first, then watch the movie!
